Several fires burn as temps soar
WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. – Residents who had to flee a wildfire in the San Gabriel Mountain community of Wrightwood are returning home as firefighters gain a handle of the small blaze.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the 10-acre fire is 20 percent contained. Officials had said about 35 homes were threatened by the flames.
The fire was one of several blazes that broke out in California as temperatures soared on Saturday.
Los Angeles County firefighters battled a wildfire by Castaic Lake that grew to about 0.9 of square mile in a remote area. The National Weather Service says the mercury hit 105 degrees in Lancaster, about 30 miles southwest of the lake.
Meanwhile, a small grass fire led to the temporary closure of State Route 13 in Oakland.
