Ray Rubio, a smokejumper with the Deschutes National Forest, was one of many from the area who were sent to an assignment in Birmingham, Alabama, as more than 30 wildfires are burning in the South.

Rubio suffered a serious head injury and broken kneecap in a fall last Wednesday, family members said. He is in intensive care and on life support.

Rubio’s family and friends are by his side at the hospital where he’s being treated.
