DENVER – Colorado becomes the first state in the county to begin nighttime helicopter suppression operations with training this month.

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control held a training exercise near the Brush Hollow Reservoir. Simulations were done to test pilot proficiency as well as the efficiency of the operations.

Helicopter crews practiced water bucket drops over several hours for several weeks. The work was combined with ground crews also utilizing night vision capabilities.

The CDFPC goal is to have a nighttime aviation program that can supplement daytime operations.
