CA Teacher’s Pool-Powered Fire Suppression System Gains Attention Amid Wildfires

A South Pasadena teacher’s innovative sprinkler system is gaining national attention for helping homeowners protect their properties.

David Whitman, a high school environmental sciences teacher, has developed self-contained fire sprinkler systems that use swimming pool water to combat flames before they reach homes, NBC Los Angeles reports/

Whitman’s creation, dubbed “Brushfire Battle Systems,” was highlighted earlier this week when a Pacific Palisades family credited the device with saving their house during a wildfire. Since the story aired, Whitman has been inundated with over 200 inquiries from homeowners eager to learn more about his product.

Whitman builds the systems on his backyard patio, a space that may soon be outgrown due to the demand. Since launching his company in 2019, he has constructed about 80 units, including one sent to Hawaii after the Lahaina fires.

Whitman, however, emphasizes that they are not a substitute for evacuation plans and professional firefighting efforts.
