British Columbia Wildland Firefighter, 19, Killed by Tree Fall in Revelstoke Fire

Nineteen-year-old British Columbia firefighter Devyn Gale died fighting a wildfire near the City of Revelstoke on Thursday.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Friday Gale and her crew from B.C. Wildfire Service were clearing brush near a small fire in a remote area. When the crew lost contact with Gale, they went looking. She was found pinned underneath a tree, CBC reports. She was airlifted to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke, where she died from her injuries.

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to (the firefighter’s) family and community, both at home and in the BC Wildfire Service,” the British Columbia General Employees Union (BCGEU) said in a statement.
