Northern California Wildfire Not Expected to Grow

Lassen County wildfire is 65 percent contained

SUSANVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire that has burned more than 5 square miles (13 square kilometers) in northeastern California is not expected to grow further.

The Bureau of Land Management says the blaze east of Eagle Lake in rural Lassen County is 65 percent contained Sunday.

The fire was ignited by lightning on Wednesday.

The agency says that where it is practical firefighters are working to save unburned islands of vegetation that serves as habitat for sage grouse, the bird species whose numbers have dwindled.

In Central California, a blaze in a rugged area of Tulare County has grown to nearly a square mile (2.6 square kilometers).
