Wildfire is burning near the Wnanapum Dam

BEVERLY, Wash. (AP) — A fast-moving wildfire in central Washington state has grown to 5.4 square miles, prompting the Grant County Sheriff’s Office to order hundreds of nearby residents to evacuate.

The wildfire is near Wnanapum Dam, and grew quickly in dry, windy conditions early Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office has issued a mandatory evacuation notice to residents of Beverly Burke Road between Highway 26 and Highway 243, and for the town of Smyrna.

The sheriff’s office also told residents of the communities of Beverly, Schawana and Wanapum Village to be ready to move at a moment’s notice.

Officials say no homes have been consumed by the fire.

The wildfire has caused power outages in nearby Mattawa.
