Wildfire Burns Over 800 Acres in South Carolina

Wildfire closes Highway 161

HUGER, S.C. (AP) — A wildfire has burned hundreds of acres in the Francis Marion National Forest in eastern South Carolina.

The U.S. Forest Service reported the fire in the national forest north of Charleston had burned more than 800 acres (1.25 sq. miles) by Thursday morning.

The fire prompted officials to close state Highway 161 near Huger.

U.S. Forest spokeswoman Pam Baltimore said two fires had been reported, although the smaller one had been contained by late Wednesday afternoon.

She said officials hope to have the larger fire contained Thursday afternoon.

No injuries have been reported and no buildings have been threatened by the fire.
