Wildfire Training Set in Nebraska

Prescribed burn in Wildcat Hills

GERING, Neb. (AP) — The Gering Fire Department will lead fire training exercises on public land in the Panhandle for the annual West Nebraska Engine Academy.

The exercises are scheduled for Sept. 14 and 15 at Cedar Canyon Wildlife Management Area in the Wildcat Hills.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife biologist Chris Becker says hunters should be aware that burning will be occurring at various locations on the property.

He says the event will not only help train firefighters. The land will receive the benefits of prescribed burning as a bonus. Land managers often use prescribed burning to improve diversity of desirable plants and lessen the risk of catastrophic wildfires.
