Vermont Plans Green Mountain National Forest Fires

Burns will treat 200 to 600 acres

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — Green Mountain National Forest plans to use prescribed fires in the coming weeks to treat about 200 to 600 acres of the forest.

Officials say the fires are used to reduce heavy accumulations of grass and brush to cut down on the potential for large uncontrollable wildfires and to restore wildlife habitat, regenerate growth and improve watershed conditions.

Smoke will be visible and nearby landowners may smell it but otherwise the fires are not expected to impact property owners.

The U.S. Fore Service says the timing depends on the weather and condition of the vegetation but say the burn window is not likely to exceed more than six weeks.

The burn locations and other details will be announced by the Forest Service near the date of the planned fires.
