Firefighters Battle New Wildfires in France

Two new wildfires near Cabris and Istres

 

PARIS (AP) — French firefighters on Tuesday battled two wildfires in southern France, one near an urban area on the Mediterranean coast and another one in woodland around the small southern town of Cabris, near the perfume-making region of Grasse.

The city of Istres, west of Marseille, said in a statement that a neighborhood has been evacuated as a precaution after a fire started near homes. About 200 firefighters, three Canadair and one Dash planes and one helicopter were fighting the blaze.

Officials said the fire in Istres was brought under control later Tuesday. There have been no reported injuries.

Meanwhile, Florian Vautrin of the Alpes-Maritimes regional authority said that the fire near the town of Cabris was “more spectacular than serious,” with giant plumes of smokes visible for miles.

Vautrin said the fire was not near any homes.
